Latvia built a fence on the border with Belarus

Construction of the fence began in 2023, in fact it was built in a year. Then it was built on land areas, but this year it was built on water areas
This is reported by the Latvian publication LSM.
Until the end of 2024, work will continue on the necessary accompanying infrastructure, in particular, roads for patrolling and trail bridges. They will also think about what to do on two sites - on the Daugava and Lake Riču, where the fence is not foreseen.
Currently, six metal communication towers, access roads and 16.7 kilometres of roads for patrolling are under construction. There are plans to build a road along Lake Richu, which will give border guards the opportunity to move quickly along the water body, reacting to possible violations in this place.
It is clear that such a fence will not protect against a full-fledged military invasion, but it can serve as an obstacle to illegal entry into Latvian territory. In addition, the fence is a kind of signalling system, violation of which indicates aggressive plans on the part of Belarus.
According to the State Border Guard of Latvia, the number of attempts to illegally cross the Latvian-Belarusian border has increased in recent days.
Latvian border guards report that they face a rather intensive flow of people who want to enter Latvia illegally. Up to fifty such attempts are expected per day. In their opinion, such a flow of illegal immigrants is deliberately provoked by the special services of Belarus, which are under the full control of the Russian special services.
