There were no such reactors in Ukraine, none in the former Soviet Union and none in Europe yet.

An agreement has been signed between Enerhoatom and Westinghouse Electric Company on the purchase of equipment for Khmelnytskyy nuclear power plant's unit 5. This was reported by the Ukrainian Energy Ministry.

It is noted that Ukraine, together with its US partners, continues to move towards the complete destruction of Russia's monopoly in the nuclear technology market.

on 17 December 2023, the Ministry of Energy signed an agreement on the purchase of equipment for power unit 5 of Khmelnytskyi NPP. It will be built using the American AR1000 technology.

There were no such reactors in Ukraine, they are not available in the post-Soviet space, and they are not yet available in Europe. This is one of the most advanced technologies in the nuclear power industry, which makes it possible to maintain safety systems of nuclear power plants even in case of blackouts and absence of diesel generators or other power supply systems, - emphasised the Minister of Energy of Ukraine German Galushchenko.

Obtaining this equipment is important for the Ukrainian energy system, as the actual capacity of the AR1000 units is 1100 MW, while currently the most powerful nuclear units in Ukraine are 1000 MW.

The President of Energoatom noted that the construction of the relevant capacities will start immediately after the Verkhovna Rada adopts the necessary law.

Chief Executive Officer of Westinghouse Electric Company Patrick Fragman, in his turn, noted that the AR1000 technology is one of the most promising in the world.

He said that today five AR1000 units are in operation in the world, in particular in the USA and China, and another five are almost ready for commissioning. Poland and Bulgaria are interested in building such reactors, as well as a number of other countries.
