Japan will give Ukrainians access to the labor market

From December 1, foreigners in Japan who are refugees from conflict zones, including Ukraine, will be able to obtain long-term resident status with a work visa.
This with reference to the Immigration Agency of Japan reports the national news agency Kyodo.
As indicated, changes in legislation were carried out in order to allow the right of residence to persons from conflict zones, whose circumstances do not meet the requirements of a refugee.
Japan is a signatory to the 1951 UN Refugee Convention, which obliges members of the country to provide them with protection. However, people who have fled Ukraine and other countries with similar circumstances do not fit the Convention's description of refugees.
According to the Japanese Immigration Service Agency, as of 20 September 2023, there were 2,091 Ukrainians in Japan, of whom 1,931 had been living in Japan on a "certain activity" visa for one year. Permission for their stay in Japan was granted by the Minister of Justice.
As is known, the head of the Japanese Foreign Ministry, Yoshimasa Hayashi, arrived in Ukraine recently for the first time since the Russian invasion. Together with his Ukrainian counterpart, Dmytro Kuleba, he discussed ways to end the Russian invasion as quickly as possible. The Japanese foreign minister is accompanied by the heads of Japanese companies, including the CEO of the Rakuten Group, Hiroshi Mikitani.
It is known that at the same time there are about 6 million Ukrainians in European countries. Read more about why some Ukrainians stay in the EU while others return home.
