Giorgia Meloni had an informal meeting with Trump

Meloni's supporters are counting on the Italian prime minister to become Trump's "top ally in Europe."
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Maloney on Saturday, 4 January arrived at the residence of US President-elect Donald Trump in Mar-a-Lago (Florida) for an informal meeting with the politician. This was reported by the American newspaper The New York Times , citing three sources.
As the publication points out, the meeting between Meloni and Trump took place just a few days before the Italian prime minister's official meeting with incumbent US President Joe Biden in Italy on 9-12 January.
The newspaper writes that Trump had dinner with Meloni, whom he called a "fantastic woman" after the meeting.
They watched a film together with some potential members of the incoming Trump administration, including Secretary of State nominee Mark Rubio and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent," the publication writes.
Citing its own sources NYT writes that politicians during the meeting could have talked about Italy's mediation between Trump and other European politicians, American support for NATO countries and Ukraine.
Another possible topic, could have been the detention of the famous Italian journalist Cecilia Sala in Iran. This came days after Italy arrested, at the request of the US, an Iranian suspected of supplying drone components to the Iranian Revolutionary Guard.
Since his election, the newspaper notes, Trump's residence has been visited by several leaders of state, including Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, Argentine President Javier Milieu and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
