The initiative is a clear sign of solidarity with Ukraine and aims to preserve Ukrainian identity, culture and Ukrainian refugees' ties with their homeland.

The state of Hesse in Germany is introducing Ukrainian as a second foreign language in schools. The subject will be introduced in September 2024. This was reported in the Ministry of Education of Hesse.

It is reported that the initiative is introduced in view of the fact that more than 20 thousand schoolchildren from Ukraine live and study in the region. Also more than 300 Ukrainian teachers work in schools in Hesse.

We would like to offer them educational and career prospects based on their individual talents, including for rebuilding their own country. This will send a clear signal of solidarity in difficult times," explained the idea, Armin Schwarz, the Minister of Culture of the State of Hesse.

She added that the initiative is experimental and everyone will be able to learn Ukrainian.

Other federal states offer only individual language courses in Ukrainian at schools.

According to the German authorities, there are currently more than one million Ukrainian citizens in Germany who have entered the country since the beginning of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
