In Minsk on the night of May 4, at the age of 87, Stanislav Shushkevich, the first head of the independent Republic of Belarus, died.



His wife Irina informed ERB about his death.

In April of this year, Shushkevich's health deteriorated after suffering a coronavirus infection, for some time he was in intensive care.

Stanislav Shushkevich was a People's Deputy of the USSR (since 1989), a People's Deputy of the BSSR (since 1990), and was elected First Deputy Chairman of the Supreme Council. After the August coup of 1991, he headed the Belarusian parliament.

Shushkevich was also one of the participants in the Belovezhskaya Accords, which in December 1991 buried the USSR.

He was removed from the post of chairman of the Supreme Council in early 1994. Participated in the presidential elections of 1994, but did not go to the second round.

In 1995 he was re-elected to the Supreme Council of Belarus, he was a member of the Civil Action faction. In the fall of 1996, he signed a statement to the Constitutional Court on the impeachment of Alexander Lukashenko.

Shushkevich headed the Belarusian Social Democratic Hramada for a long time. He criticized Lukashenka's policy.
