ChNPP still on fire after Russian drone strike

A Russian attack drone with a high-explosive warhead hit the shelter of the destroyed Unit 4 of the Chernobyl nuclear plant on the night of 14 February.

Ukraine's State Agency for Exclusion Zone Management has reported that a fire continues at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant after a strike on the shelter of the destroyed Unit 4.

It is specified that the extinguishing of the filler of the outer skin of the arch of the new safe confinement continues.

From 22:00 to 07:00 five employees of the State Emergency Situations Service and two units of equipment were involved. As of 07:00 attracted 40 employees of the State emergency service and eight units of equipment, reported in the agency.

At the same time, the State Agency of Ukraine for Exclusion Zone Management has inspected the technical condition of the new confinement after the impact. Specialists found out that at this time are observed:

  • defects in the cladding without solid destruction of up to 200 square metres;
  • damage to the inner lining filler;
  • existing damage to bolted joints;
  • deformed joints of the upper part of the TRP structures.

It is stated that specialists are measuring the radiation background near the reactor. At this time, the output of radioactive products beyond the established limits has not been detected.

Earlier, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, speaking to journalists in Munich, said that the Russian attack on ChNPP could have been purposeful.
