Spain's parliament passed a law granting paid leave to women with severe menstrual pain. And became the first country in Europe to do so.

This is reported by Politico.

The Spanish Congress assures that the new bill allows women to call doctors "in case of incapacity due to menstruation".

Spanish women have the right to take as much leave as they need. They are paid for by the state social security system, not by employers. To take leave, a doctor's certificate is required, which approves temporary incapacity to work. The Spanish government proposes taking "menstrual leave" for three days, with the possibility of extending it to five days.

It is also noted that the law is part of a wider project that, among other things, aims to facilitate access to abortions in public hospitals, but also includes the provision of free menstrual products in schools and prisons.

Recall that 'menstrual leave' is currently provided in several countries, including Japan, Taiwan, Indonesia, South Korea and Zambia. The initiative has now appeared in Europe.
