GSD confirms attack by attack drones on Smolensk aircraft factory where Kh-59 missiles were produced



The press service of the Main Directorate of Intelligence of the Ukrainian Defence Ministry said this in a statement.

The GSD claims that the Smolensk aircraft factory has disrupted the process of producing Kh-59 missiles of various modifications.

According to confirmed data, three out of four drones hit the target, causing significant damage to the production facilities of the military enterprise of the aggressor state," the report said.

The GSD noted that the Kh-59 (in modification Kh-59MK2) air-to-surface missile with a range of up to 280 kilometres is one of those with which the Russian Aerospace Forces most often bombard military and civilian objects in Ukraine.

on 1 October, the Russian Defence Ministry said that three Ukrainian UAVs had been destroyed over Smolensk Region, and later the ministry added information about the destruction of two more drones. The governor of the region wrote that there were no casualties.

The first to talk about explosions at the plant were eyewitnesses.

A UAV was heard on Pokrovka, then an explosion in the area of the aircraft factory - said in the first of such reports.

The occupants tried to shoot down the drone with small arms. This was reported by Russian propaganda Telegram channels.

What does the Smolensk Aviation Plant produce

According to the Smolensk Aircraft Plant's website, its main activities are:

  • serial production of products developed at the enterprises of the Tactical Missile Armament Corporation;
  • customised production of Yak-18T, SM-92T aircraft in various modifications;
  • maintenance of Yak-18T aircraft, production of spare parts for Yak-40 and Yak-42 aircraft.

In October 2022, the regional authorities reported that the Ministry of Defence had loaded the plant with government orders until 2025, and the volume of its production would quadruple in a few years - from 6 to 24 billion rubles. For this purpose, the enterprise had to double the number of employees.
