NATO reacts to Africa's 'peace initiatives'

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg has reacted to Africa's "peace" initiatives regarding the war in Ukraine. He stressed that the war must end with a just peace. He said this in an interview with Welt am Sonntag.

Everyone wants Russia's war against Ukraine to end, but it must be a just peace," he said.

He stressed that only a just end to the armed conflict can guarantee that the peace will last and a truce on Russian terms cannot guarantee that war will not erupt again on Ukrainian territory.

Only Ukraine can determine the terms that are acceptable to it," Stoltenberg said.

The NATO secretary-general said that Ukraine's success on the front gave it more opportunities to dictate its conditions to Moscow.

The more occupied territories Ukraine is able to liberate, the better position it will have at the negotiating table to achieve a just and lasting peace," Stoltenberg explained.

The NATO secretary-general also pointed out that Ukraine's future would be closely linked to NATO. At the same time, he said that the first priority for Kiev is to end the war and only when the state is whole and sovereign will the country be able to join the Alliance.

We must make sure that when this war is over, there are credible security arrangements for Ukraine so that Russia cannot rearm and attack again, and so that the cycle of Russian aggression is broken," Stoltenberg added.

He noted that the organization will adopt a long-term support package for Ukraine at the NATO summit in Vilnius.
