Participants of the 29th Ukrainian Antarctic Expedition are to replace their colleagues who have worked in Antarctica for almost a year already.

The Ukrainian research vessel Noosphere has left the Chilean port of Punta Arenas for the Antarctic station Akademik Vernadskyy. This is reported by the National Antarctic Science Centre.

The icebreaker has two important missions:

  • to deliver the 29th Ukrainian Antarctic Expedition to the station.
  • to ensure seasonal research in the Southern Ocean and at the Akademik Vernadsky station.

the 14 members and participants of the expedition should replace their colleagues who have worked in the Antarctic for almost a year already. Together with the new team a lot of cargoes for its wintering, in particular, food, things, fuel and so on are going to the "Vernadsky". A total of 50 tonnes of cargo and 140 cubic metres of fuel," the statement says.

The captain of this voyage of "Noosphere" is Pavel Panasyuk. It was he who once led the ship in its first Antarctic season.

Now the third Antarctic season of the "Noosphere" is underway. It began on 17 November 2023, when the icebreaker set sail from the port of Cape Town to the icy continent.

The ship provided a changeover at the Polish Antarctic station "Arztovsky" and also delivered a seasonal expedition to "Vernadsky" for technical and scientific work.
