Ukraine may become EU member during war - President's Office

In fact, negotiations on Ukraine's accession to the EU could start as early as June.

The Ukrainian presidential office believes that our country's accession to the European Union during the war with Russia is possible. This was said by the deputy head of the OP, Ihor Zhovkva, in an interview with the We Are Ukraine TV channel.

He noted that there are no bans on EU membership for countries that are involved in a military conflict.

There are no prohibitions that this or that country cannot join the association during the war. Clearly we know the founding treaties. But let's be honest, we want our victory to be very fast - emphasised the official.

We shall remind you that during her visit to Kiev, European Parliament President Roberta Metsola said that official negotiations on Ukraine's accession to the EU should start already in June this year. She stressed that the European Parliament "was the first European institution to call for granting Ukraine candidate status and then starting accession negotiations"

On 12 March, the European Commission officially presented the negotiating framework for Ukraine and Moldova's accession to the EU. They set out guidelines and a framework for accession negotiations with each candidate country.

Next, the EU Council should start internal discussions on the drafts and approve them. The Council Presidency will then present an agreed common EU position at the first intergovernmental conference with each country, marking the formal start of accession negotiations.
