Sibiga made a statement on Ukraine's accession to the EU
Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sibiga has said that after the change of power in Hungary, the main obstacle to the negotiations on Ukraine's accession to the EU has disappeared. Kiev expects to open all the negotiation clusters as early as in June.
Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sibiga has said that the key political obstacle to the negotiations on Ukraine's accession to the European Union has been removed after the change of power in Hungary. According to him, the former government headed by Viktor Orbán remained for a long time the main factor hindering the progress of the European integration process. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sibiga said this during a ZOOM briefing with journalists.
We believe that the main political obstacle in the form of Viktor Orban's government has been removed after the elections in Hungary. And we have really reached a position where diplomacy should and can do its job," Sibiga emphasised during a ZOOM-briefing with journalists.
The Ukrainian foreign minister said that he had already held a meeting with the new Hungarian Foreign Minister Anita Orban. As a result of the talks, he said, confidence in the possibility of launching new stages of negotiations between Ukraine and the EU has only increased.
Ukraine expects that the negotiation clusters on EU accession will be officially opened as early as in June. Kiev insists on launching all six negotiation clusters at the same time.
We have the support of European partners. And it is important that this happens, because it is not only about Ukraine, but also about the interests of Europe," the minister said.
Earlier, European Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos admitted the opening of the first negotiating block in the first half of the year, and the others - later. In her turn, the head of European diplomacy, Kaja Kallas, said that she expected all six negotiation clusters to be opened by the summer.
