The threat of using nuclear weapons is becoming more and more urgent, according to UN Secretary General António Guterres . He spoke about his fears in Hiroshima at a speech dedicated to the 77th anniversary of the atomic bombing of the city by US troops.
According to the Secretary General, "mankind is playing with loaded weapons" and a new nuclear arms race is gaining momentum. The Secretary General stressed that many world leaders are building up arsenals worth hundreds of billions of dollars.
There are almost 13,000 nuclear weapons in the world today, Guterres said.
He stressed that the crisis is rapidly spreading around the world and the threat of a nuclear strike could become real.
On the eve of the United States said that China is increasing its nuclear potential by 3-4 times. This was stated by US Deputy Secretary of Defense for Political Affairs Colin Cal during the UN conference on the revision of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty. Also, the Pentagon stressed that they are ready to advocate for nuclear disarmament.
In turn, China assured that they have only so many nuclear weapons that can protect the country from external threats.
