The Ministry of Social Policy predicts a significant reduction in population by 2050

Ukraine is projected to experience a significant population decline.
In the next 26 years, the population of our country may significantly decrease. According to the Institute of Demography and Quality of Life Problems of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, 25.2 million people will live in the country in 2050, the Ministry of Social Policy said.
The Ministry stressed that in August 2023 in Ukraine lived 36.3 million people. Of them on the territory controlled by the Ukrainian authorities - 31.5 million people.
It noted that the main reason for such a disappointing forecast was the war. Analysts said that due to military aggression by the Russian Federation, life expectancy in Ukraine has decreased. And if in 2020 this indicator for men was 66.4 years, then in 2023 - already 57.3 years. As for women, in 2020 the average life expectancy of Ukrainian women was at the level of 76.2 years, and in 2023 - the indicator fell to the mark of 70.9 years.
In addition, the population will be affected by emigration. Thus, about 6 million people were forced to leave their homes and go to the West, a significant part of whom are women and children.
At the same time, the birth rate in Ukraine has decreased by 45% since 2021," the document states.
According to analysts, if the situation continues to develop in the same direction, the population of Ukraine may decrease to 28.9 million people by 2041 and to 25.2 million people by 2051.
The Ministry of Social Policy calls this situation critical and suggests adopting the Strategy of Demographic Development of Ukraine, which will help the country to overcome the demographic crisis. At the same time, the ministry notes that it will be very difficult to improve demographic indicators in the near future. In the best case, experts predict that 33.9 million people will live in our country on 01 January 2041 and 31.6 million people on 01 January 2051.
