The 'James Webb' telescope has discovered a miniature 'solar system' around a failed star.



Astronomers using the telescope "James Webb" made a surprising discovery - found six new cosmic rogue objects, which by their characteristics are similar to planets, but formed as stars.

This is stated in a paper published on the site of the electronic archive of preprints arXiv.

These objects, called brown dwarfs, are larger in size than giant planets, but do not have enough mass to shine like real stars.

One of the most interesting findings was the smallest of the six dwarfs discovered, which may be creating a miniature planetary system around itself.

This object, with a mass of just five Jupiters, is surrounded by a dust disc, a possible source for planet formation. Astronomers speculate that this brown dwarf will eventually fade away and its planets, if they form, will eventually freeze over.

The study was conducted by a team of scientists led by Ray Jayawardhan of Johns Hopkins University. The discovery was made in the star cluster NGC 1333, located about 1,000 light years from Earth, using the NIRISS instrument on the James Webb Telescope, which operates in the infrared.

The researchers note that these brown dwarfs may be the least massive of all known similar objects, which raises new questions for astronomers about the processes of star formation and the origin of such rogue worlds. In addition, the question remains: are the detected objects really brown dwarfs, or are they orphan planets ejected from their systems? The study continues, and astronomers hope for further discoveries that will help answer these questions.
