The French Senate recognized the Holodomor as a genocide of the people of Ukraine
The French Senate (the upper house of parliament) has decided to recognise the Holodomor as genocide of the Ukrainian people.
This was announced on the Senate's official website.
The decision was supported by 327 senators and opposed by 16.
Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba expressed gratitude to the French senators for this historic step.
I am grateful to the French senators for this historic vote, which restores justice and honours the memory of millions of victims. Such crimes should never be repeated and should never be forgotten," Kuleba said.
Earlier, the French National Assembly, the lower house of parliament, also passed a resolution recognizing the Holodomor as a genocide of the Ukrainian people.
In 2006, the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine declared the Holodomor an act of genocide against the Ukrainian people. To date, 27 countries have recognized it as such.
