From 17 to 20 May 2024, the city of Leipzig will become the epicentre of the gothic and dark music scene thanks to the 31st Wave-Gotik-Treffen Festival (WGT).

This annual festival, which attracts around 20,000 spectators, has undergone significant changes since its inception in 1992, when two young goths from Leipzig conceived of an event that went beyond the typical music festival format to become an all-encompassing cultural event.

Venues and atmosphere

Leipzig's urban landscape will host the festival at around 40 venues, including the historic Moritzbastai, the domed Volkspalast Hall, the Stadtbad and other significant locations. However, the main centre remains the Agra Messepark in Markkleberg, which will host both the main concert events and a large-scale market of Gothic wares.

Musical diversity

More than 200 artists will perform at this year's festival, covering all niches of dark music - from gothic metal and EBM to dark ambient and neofolk. Notable acts include Nitzer Ebb, Ladytron and Christian Death, as well as emerging artists and bands representing the true underground pulse of the gothic music scene.

More than music

WGT is not only famous for its musical diversity, but also for its cultural offerings. Visitors can listen to classical music, including operas and chamber music, as well as take part in other art forms such as readings and theatre. A medieval market in a pagan village (Heidnisches Dorf) and a Victorian picnic add historical flavour, while a large fetish party invites guests to partake in more risqué activities while adhering to a strict dress code.

Participatory Practices

Tickets cost €170 and include free use of public transport in the 110 Leipzig area. For those planning to camp, a special Obsorgekarte ticket is required, which also provides access to camping from 16 to 21 May. In addition, a parking vignette is required for those travelling to the festival site by car.

Hospitable environment

Over the past three decades, Leipzig has hosted Wave-Gotik-Treffen and residents have become accustomed to the annual influx of Gothic culture enthusiasts. The festival not only promotes the local hospitality and tourism industry, but also fosters a sense of community and acceptance.

International Gothic Festival

Every year, WGT builds its reputation as a place of pilgrimage for the Gothic community around the world. More than a festival, it is a gathering where Goths gather to celebrate their unique culture in a city that opens its arms wide to welcome them.

As the 31st Wave-Gotik-Treffen approaches, excitement is building not only for the music and parties, but also for the opportunity to be part of a global family that comes together to celebrate diversity, art and culture under the banner of gothic and dark music. For those attending the festival for the first time, resources such as sadgoth.com offer valuable tips on how to make the most of this unique event. More information and updates can be found on the official WGT website.

Leipzig is once again ready to host this dark romance event, promising an unforgettable experience for new participants and returning veterans alike. Whether it's music, culture or community, Wave-Gotik-Treffen offers something special for everyone who finds beauty in the dark side of life.
