Stefanyshyna says which countries oppose Ukraine's invitation to NATO

The United States of America and Germany oppose an official invitation to Ukraine to join NATO. This was stated by Deputy Prime Minister for European and Euro-Atlantic Integration of Ukraine Olha Stefanyshyna during a telethon.

According to her, other countries on which Ukraine's accession to the alliance depends do not object to its membership.

She pointed out that the information that the USA and Germany were against it had been published the day before by the US newspaper The New York Times. In Stefanishyna's opinion, the purpose of this publication was to prepare NATO countries and Ukraine for what decisions to expect or not to expect at the upcoming summit of the alliance.

At the same time, Stefanyshyna noted that the issue of inviting Ukraine to NATO is on the agenda of our country and it will remain there until Ukraine receives an offer to join the Alliance.

The format of the invitation was proposed by Ukraine itself, as a legal guarantee of joining NATO. It is on the agenda. Absolutely all allies support this decision except two. Since this information has become public, the US and Germany are now trying to pay attention to other sceptical allies, such as Hungary and Slovakia. But it is these two countries that are the key position," Stefanyshina explained.

Stefanyshyna explained that the US and Germany are cautious about inviting Ukraine to NATO because "it is no longer just talk, but a real decision."

She added that Ukraine's invitation to NATO should not be tied to the summit of the organisation, which will be held in Washington from 9 to 11 July 2024. According to her, NATO is not in the habit of tying important decisions to summits. Therefore, Ukraine's invitation to join the alliance is not conditioned by a clear deadline.
