Salicylic acid: how it works and why you need it in skin care
The name Salix nigra translates from Latin as "black willow".
It is from the bark of this tree that natural salicin and salicylic acid are obtained. You may not have been aware of this fact, as many of us were. Salicylic acid belongs to the beta-hydroxy acids (BHA) in terms of chemical properties.
Main mechanism of action
- Antiseptic effect. Salicylic acid is able to destroy the proteins of microbes living on the surface of the skin. Because of this, it is often referred to as an effective antiseptic.
- Dissolving fats. As a representative of BHA, salicylic acid is able to penetrate pores and easily dissolve lipids that form sebum plugs. As a result, sebum and bacteria are "forced" outward, clearing pores.
- Proven acne control. Thanks to the properties described above, this substance is effective against acne (acne), black spots and inflammatory elements. It has anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial and antifungal actions, which helps to visibly improve the condition of the skin.
Special benefits for oily and problem skin
Unlike AHA acids (alpha hydroxy acids), which are mostly water-soluble, salicylic acid is a fat-soluble compound. That is why it easily interacts with sebum and penetrates deeply into clogged pores, "etching" black spots from there. It also has a light brightening and exfoliating effect, which contributes to a more even skin tone.
Where can I find it?
Today, salicylic acid is found in many cosmetic products for problem skin: foams, gels, tonics, creams. However, it is important to take into account the peculiarities of the composition, since some formulas contain alcohol as a base. Such products with excessive use dry out the skin, which can provoke increased sebum production and, as a consequence, lead to new inflammations.
What to pay attention to
- Skin type. Salicylic acid is especially useful for people with oily and combination skin. If, however, you have dry and hypersensitive skin, be careful and choose milder formulas.
- Concentration percentage. For daily care, products with 0.5-2% salicylic acid are usually suitable. Higher concentrations are best used as short courses or under the supervision of a professional.
- Regularity of application. Despite the fact that the effect of salicylic acid is noticeable quite quickly, it is important not to overdo it. Excessive frequency of use can cause irritation and peeling.
To summarise: thanks to its fat-soluble properties and ability to penetrate deep into the pores, salicylic acid is an excellent treatment for acne and black spots, reduces inflammation and makes the complexion tone more even. But as with any active ingredient, be careful to use in moderation and choose products that suit your skin type.
