Ukraine's ombudsman Dmytro Lubinets has reported the probable execution of at least two unarmed Ukrainian prisoners of war in Kursk Region by Russian troops.

Lubinets emphasised that this is a serious violation of the Geneva Convention and international humanitarian law, under which prisoners of war must be protected from any acts of violence. In response, he has already sent appeals to the UN and the International Committee of the Red Cross, calling on the international community to intervene and stop the acts of brutality.

Prisoners of war must always be protected, particularly from acts of violence. But Russia has once again committed a war crime, which is a serious violation of the Geneva Convention and international humanitarian law," Lubinets stressed.

Earlier, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sibiga also condemned the executions of prisoners of war in Kursk Region on social network X (Twitter) and called for a tough international reaction. He noted that cases of violence against Ukrainian prisoners of war by Russian troops have become more frequent and called what is happening barbaric and a gross violation of the laws and customs of war. Sibiga pointed to alarming UN data showing that 95 per cent of Ukrainian POWs are tortured and deprived of basic living conditions.

The incidents have resonated widely and Ukrainian officials are demanding that Russia be held accountable for violations of human rights and humanitarian law.
