Russia deploys bombers capable of carrying nuclea weapons near Norway
A military base near Norway now has 12 Russian bombers.
This is reported by the Norwegian edition of Faktisk , citing satellite imagery from Planet Labs.
The photographs from October 7 show that seven Tu-160 and four Tu-95 bombers are located at the Olenya base (Kola Peninsula, near Norway). Two days later, Planet Labs spotted another Tu-160 standing on the airbase's runway.
Faktisk's analysis of satellite images from Planet shows that the presence of strategic bombers on the Kola Peninsula is long-term and has increased in scale. The planes are usually based at the Engels air base, 720 km southeast of Moscow.
It is worth noting that the Tu-160 was developed during the Cold War and is considered the largest bomber in the world. Its top speed is more than twice the speed of sound and it can travel 2,200 kilometers in one hour.
According to Ukrainian military intelligence, several strategic bombers located on the Kolya are used to strike at Ukrainian targets. On October 8, seven Tu-160s were equipped with Kh-101 cruise missiles at the Olenya base, Ukrainian intelligence writes on its website.
