Romania has extended humanitarian aid for Ukrainians until the end of 2025.

The Romanian government has decided to extend humanitarian support for Ukrainian refugees until 31 December 2025. This was reported by the Romanian news agency Agerpres.

At a meeting on 20 March, a normative act was approved, which extends the provision of assistance to foreign citizens and stateless persons who left Ukraine because of the armed conflict.

Who can receive assistance?

Humanitarian support applies to:

  • People who entered Romania before 1 July 2024 and are accommodated in refugee centres. They receive 500 lei per month per person and 1,500 lei per family.

  • Vulnerable categories: people with disabilities, temporarily disabled, women in the third trimester of pregnancy and others.

One-time allowance for new refugees

By a separate decree, the Romanian government specified the mechanism of lump-sum allowance payment for Ukrainians who received residence permits until 1 July 2024.

  • The aid is paid for three consecutive months: 750 lei per month per person and 2000 lei per family.

How many Ukrainians are under temporary protection in the EU?

According to Eurostat, as of 31 January 2025, about 4.3 million Ukrainians had temporary protection status in the EU. Most of them are in:

  • Germany - 1.1 million people,

  • Poland - 975 thousand,

  • Czech Republic - 376 thousand.

Romania continues to support refugees, helping them to adapt to new living conditions.

How many Ukrainians remain abroad and who are ready to return

Now there are more than 6 million in the countries of Europe. Most have managed to obtain legal status, basic support, access to medical care, education and the labour market. However, life in a foreign land is accompanied by many challenges, and a significant part of people still live "between two worlds".

  • Have Ukrainians been able to adapt abroad.
  • Working abroad: what difficulties Ukrainians have faced.
  • The problem of housing.
  • Medical care abroad.
  • Education for children.
  • What can the state do to return its citizens.
