US intelligence: Russian Federation may switch to defence in Ukraine in 2023 due to lack of resources

Russia faces a shortage of ammunition and personnel, which may force it to move to hold and defend existing positions, prolonging the war over time.

This was reported by The New York Times, citing U.S. Director of National Intelligence Euryl Haines.

Haynes stated:

Even though the Russian offensive continues, they (the Russians) are taking heavy losses. Putin probably has a better understanding of the limits of what his military can achieve and seems to be focusing on more limited military objectives.

Russia may choose to continue the war in Ukraine, even if it means long pauses in offensive action, as its best chance to achieve its strategic goals.

Unless Russia initiates mandatory mobilisation and detects significant supplies of ammunition from third countries, it will find it increasingly difficult to maintain its current level of offensive operations in the coming months.

In short, we do not predict that the Russian military will recover enough this year to achieve significant territorial gains," predicted the director of US National Intelligence
