The Pontiff emphasised the need for maximum efforts to establish a genuine, just and sustainable peace as soon as possible.

During his first public address in St Peter's Square on Sunday, the newly elected pontiff Leo XIV appealed to thousands of believers for a swift end to violence and the restoration of peace in areas of acute conflict. According to the Associated Press, the head of the Catholic Church highlighted the situation in Ukraine and Gaza, emphasising the need for a just and lasting peace in these lands. This is reported by the Associated Press.

In his speech, Leo XIV recalled the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II, noting that the words of his predecessor Francis about the "third world war" remain relevant today. He highlighted the suffering of Ukrainians, emphasising: "In my heart is the pain of the dear Ukrainian people." The Pope emphatically called for all efforts to be made to achieve a sustainable and just peace in Ukraine.

In the context of the situation in the Middle East, the Pontiff called for an immediate ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, the release of all hostages and the provision of humanitarian aid to those affected.

He also expressed hope that all people held in captivity will be released and deported children will return to their families as soon as possible. Concluding his speech, Leo XIV pronounced: "No more war."

The Pontiff also congratulated women on the occasion of Mother's Day, which was celebrated in a number of countries, and made a special appeal to those mothers "who are already in heaven", wishing peace, love and consolation to all.
