Hair loss when taking Ozempic: temporary effect or cause for alarm

Is your hair falling out because of Ozempic? Experts have explained the real cause and what to do about it

GLP-1-based weight loss drugs - such as semaglutide, known under the brand names Ozempic and Wegovy- are initially associated with appetite and weight loss. However, a growing number of users are reporting an unexpected side effect: increased hair loss. Harper's BAZAAR spoke to experts on the subject.

Although hair loss was not recorded in early clinical trials, mass use of the drugs has revealed a strong link between weight loss and hair condition. Experts emphasise: the problem is more often related not to the drug itself, but to rapid weight loss and nutrient deficiencies.

Why weight loss can lead to hair loss

According to trichologists, hair is not a vital tissue, so the body "switches off" their growth one of the first when stressed. Rapid weight loss, lack of calories, protein, vitamins and minerals force the body to reallocate resources in favour of vital organs.

In addition, drastic weight loss can be a physiological and emotional stress that disrupts the hair growth cycle and puts it into a resting phase. After that, active hair loss begins in a few months.

Specialists are also studying the possible effect of GLP-1 drugs on hormonal balance, including thyroid function, but so far the main cause is considered to be weight loss.

What type of hair loss occurs most often

In most cases, telogen hair loss is a reversible condition that occurs in response to internal stress. It usually begins 3-4 months after the trigger and can result in the loss of up to 300 hairs per day instead of the usual 100.

This type of hair loss is familiar to many after childbirth, surgery or severe illness.

Will the hair recover?

Telogen hair loss is considered temporary. When weight stabilises and the body makes up for deficiencies, hair growth gradually recovers. If there is any doubt about the cause of the loss, experts advise to consult a trichologist or dermatologist to rule out other forms of alopecia.

Is it possible to stop hair loss if it has already started?

It is not possible to stop the process completely at once, but it can be slowed down and shortened in time. Experts say that modern scalp products and active serums can help follicles return to the growth phase faster and reduce the intensity of loss.

Whether it is necessary to change the diet in hair loss

Experts agree: nutrition is key.

  • Hair consists mainly of protein, so its deficiency quickly affects their condition.

  • For people taking GLP-1 preparations, the recommended protein intake is higher than average - about 1.2-1.6 g per kg of body weight.

  • Omega-3 fatty acids play an important role in maintaining the health of the scalp and follicles.

It is advised to base your diet on whole, nutritious foods and avoid ultra-processed foods where possible.

Can supplements help

Experts recommend a "food first" approach, but allow supplements for confirmed deficiencies. The most important indicators are iron, vitamin D, B12 and zinc levels.

Supplementation is best coordinated with a doctor and accompanied by analyses. As basic support, experts often mention protein complexes with essential amino acids and vitamin D in case of deficiency.

Scalp care is also important

Regular scalp cleansing is important even when hair loss is active. Reducing the frequency of washing can lead to inflammation, blocked follicles and worsen the problem.

Serums and products with peptides, anti-inflammatory ingredients, caffeine and zinc can help reduce hair loss and accelerate hair growth recovery.

Experts emphasise that it is not advisable to stop taking weight loss medication for hair loss without consulting a doctor, as in most cases the problem is temporary and correctable.
