The Russian invasion of Ukraine has serious consequences for pregnant women. They are forced to face hardship as a result of the length of the fighting.

According to the New York Times (NYT), stress can lead to maternal health problems, including premature birth and complications for newborns.

Babies born prematurely are noted to be more likely to experience respiratory, neurological and digestive complications. Those born very prematurely can have serious physical and mental health problems.

We see that the course of pregnancy has become more difficult. Usually, the birth of a new person is a joy, but now it is an anxiety," says Lyudmyla Solodzhuk, chief doctor of a hospital in Mykolayiv.

The number of caesarean sections and preterm births in the hospital has increased by 5 per cent.
