The closest super moon of the year: how and when to observe the bright moon in November
23:00, 03.11.2025

The skies in November have prepared a spectacle: on Wednesday night to Thursday night, the Moon will be closest to Earth in all of 2025.

The phenomenon is called a super moon - and it makes Earth's satellite particularly large and bright in the night sky. According to Phys.org, this will be the second of three supermoons planned for this year, and the closest in distance.

A super moon occurs when the full moon coincides with perigee, the point in the moon's orbit at which it comes closest to Earth. Because of the elliptical shape of the lunar orbit, the distance to the Moon is constantly changing. On the night of November 6, the satellite will be at a distance of less than 357 thousand kilometres - about 25 thousand kilometres closer than at apogee.

According to NASA, in moments of supermoons, the Moon can look up to 14% larger and up to 30% brighter than during the dimmest full moons of the year. However, this increase isn't easy to notice visually - the eye doesn't register changes in size without comparing it to other phases or photos.

"The difference in the Moon's size and brightness is easiest to see when you compare it to other photos or observations on different days," explained Shannon Schmoll, director of the Abrams Planetarium at the University of Michigan.

Astronomer Lawrence Wasserman of the Lowell Observatory noted that the moon's proximity may slightly increase the tides. However, these changes, he said, are subtle and do not cause serious natural effects.

The best time to observe is Wednesday evening and Thursday night, provided the weather is clear. The super moon can be seen with the naked eye, without telescopes or binoculars. The Moon will look especially beautiful as it rises above the horizon - the optical illusion will make the Moon appear even larger.

This is the second super moon this year - the first one happened in October. The third and final one is expected in December.

Supermoons occur several times a year, and although their effects are often exaggerated, they remain popular objects of observation and photography. With good visibility and no need for special equipment, November's super moon is a great reason to take a look at the sky.
