Floods in the Iberian peninsula: after Leonardo comes Marta
21:00, 07.02.2026

Spain and Portugal are preparing for a new storm Marta heading for the Iberian Peninsula on Saturday.

This comes just days after storm Leonardo, which caused severe flooding and at least one death in each country, media reported.

In Portugal, authorities have called in more than 26,500 rescuers because of the approach of Marta. Wind gusts of up to 110 kilometres per hour are expected, as well as the risk of landslides and flash floods, Civil Protection said. A senior official described the forecast as "extremely worrying".

There have already been serious consequences in both countries after previous downpours, with water blocking hundreds of roads, disrupting train services and people having to be evacuated from flooded areas.

In Spain, Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez warned after flying over affected areas in the south (near Cadiz) that the region could have "difficult days ahead" because the forecast remains dangerous.

Portugal, meanwhile, has not yet recovered from the previous bad weather: before Leonardo, the country was hit by storm Kristin, which reportedly claimed lives and caused very heavy damage (authorities were talking about billions of euros).
