The head of the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defense, Major General Kirill Budanov, said that during the siege of Mariupol, 16 Mi-8 military helicopters flew to help its defenders.
He spoke about this in an interview with the American edition of The War Zone .
There were seven such missions in total. Each time, helicopters successfully delivered the necessary replenishment. But during the fifth and seventh missions, two helicopters were shot down (on the way back). Another helicopter was also destroyed, which flew to rescue the crew of one of the two downed helicopters, Budanov said.
According to him, two helicopters flew in each mission, which carried food, drinking water, medicines and ammunition to the fighters to Azov. And during one of the missions, four helicopters took off at once.
The head of the GUR also said that during one of the missions, 72 fighters from the regiment of the Azov National Guard were brought to Azovstal to reinforce the military contingent.
