Turkish users can't log into Instagram.
Turkey has blocked access to Instagram, the country's information technology regulator announced on Friday, without giving a reason or timeline for the ban. The action also made the platform's mobile app inaccessible, Reuters reported.
The ban came after Turkish communications official Fahrettin Altun criticised Instagram on Wednesday for allegedly blocking condolence posts over the death of Ismail Haniyeh, a senior figure in the Palestinian militant group Hamas.
Ismail Haniyeh and one of his bodyguards were killed by gunfire at his residence in Tehran.
This is censorship, pure and simple," Altun, the Turkish president's communications director, told X website.
He added that Instagram has not cited any policy violations in its actions.
Meta Platforms Inc (META.O), Instagram's parent company, has not yet commented in any way on the ban or Altun's remarks.
Turkey's Information Technology and Communications Authority (BTK) published the decision on its website on 2 August.
