Buyan-M ships are designed to operate in confined sea areas such as the Black, Azov and Caspian Seas. They are small in size, can navigate navigable rivers and can quickly change basing areas. The upgraded version of the Buyan-M is equipped with eight Kalibr cruise missiles with a range of up to 2,500 kilometres and Onyx anti-ship missiles. The ship's air defence is limited to two "Gibka" anti-aircraft systems, effective only against targets at an altitude of up to 3.5 kilometres.
