Dry shampoo and hair loss: where is the myth and where is the reality

Dry shampoo has become almost a must-have item in the beauty arsenal in recent years.

It helps to quickly refresh hair, remove greasiness at the roots and add volume, especially when you don't have time for a full-blown wash. However, experts warn that improper use of this product can negatively affect the health of the scalp and lead to hair problems, writes Harper's Bazaar India.

Trichologist Hannah Gaboardi notes that dry shampoo is a useful product that helps absorb excess grease and sweat on the scalp. But when used excessively, it can cause problems. "Frequent and immoderate use can lead to product build-up, clogged hair follicles and even increased hair loss in those who are prone to it," explains the expert.

Does dry shampoo cause hair loss?

According to experts, dry shampoo itself is not the cause of hair loss. Hair loss can be due to many other factors - from hormonal changes and stress to genetics and chronic diseases. But if the product is used without subsequent cleansing of the scalp with water and shampoo, it can disrupt the natural hair growth cycle.

"Excessive use of dry shampoo blocks oxygen and nutrients from reaching the follicles. This can slow hair growth, cause dandruff, seborrhoeic dermatitis and scalp inflammation," explains Gaboardi.

Inflamed follicles become weaker, which in severe cases can lead to permanent hair loss.

How to use dry shampoo correctly

Experts advise limiting the use of dry shampoo to once a week, preferably closer to the day of the main head wash. This will reduce the risk of clogged pores and weakened follicles. If you use these products frequently, introduce a cleansing shampoo once a week to deeply rinse the scalp, followed by a moisturising mask.

Light scalp serums, tailored to individual needs, will help maintain a healthy environment for hair growth.

How to choose the right dry shampoo

Modern dry shampoos often contain caring ingredients, such as soothing aloe vera or moisturising niacinamide. Products with a lot of silicones can leave a lasting buildup if not rinsed out, so it's best to opt for a formula without heavy film-forming ingredients.

For people with sensitive skin, products without or with minimal fragrances are suitable. Living Proof and Philip Kingsley are among the brands recommended by a trichologist.

Thus, dry shampoo is not the enemy of hair health, if you use it moderately and wisely. The main thing is not to replace it with a full-fledged care, to clean the scalp in time and to choose products that meet your needs.
