Experts have explained how collagen masks and creams work
Collagen is a word that has long been part of our beauty vocabulary.
And now it's back in vogue thanks to viral TikTok masks like the Biodance Bio-Collagen Real Deep Mask and trends like collagen banking, a treatment that helps skin retain and stimulate collagen production.
But here's the question: do all these collagen products really work? Harper's Bazaar India answers.
🔬 Collagen in grooming: what works and what's just a trend
Yes, collagen products do work. But! It's important to understand what it is in the formulation that is responsible for the results. As Desiree Stordahl from Paula's Choice explains, hydrolysed coll agen (the one most commonly found in formulations) is too coarse to penetrate the skin. It moisturises but doesn't trigger your own collagen production.
Peptides, on the other hand, are a different matter. These are small molecules that can really "wake up" the skin by stimulating the production of your own collagen and elastin.
Among the best ingredients:
sh-oligopeptide-1
palmitoyl tripeptide-5
acetyl hexapeptide and others with hard-to-pronounce but effective names.
🧖 What do collagen masks do?
✔ Moisturising and smoothing
✔ Fewer fine lines and wrinkles
✔ Firmer skin
✔ A "bounce" effect - the skin feels like it's slightly bouncing with freshness
And it's not an instant evening effect. With regular use, you can really improve the texture of your skin.
💋 What about the lips?
Yes! Peptides work here too. Balms and glosses with peptides help moisturise, smooth and restore volume to your lips, especially if you're not a fan of fillers.
"Peptides don't tingle like lip plumpers, but they do work gently and consistently," says Stordahl.
📅 When to start?
The earlier the better. As early as 20+, you can incorporate these products into your skincare routine. But even at 40+ it's not too late: peptides are an investment in skin quality, not a one-off effect.
