EU ambassador to Ukraine says when Ukraine may join EU

Last December, the leaders of the EU member states at a summit in Brussels approved the start of negotiations on Ukraine's accession to the EU.

Ukraine may become a full member of the European Union as early as 2030. The EU ambassador to Ukraine, Katarina Maternova, said this on air during a national telethon.

She also noted that she initially held such an opinion and pointed out that such a timeframe was the most realistic.

I am sure that this is a realistic time frame," the EU ambassador to Ukraine said.

We shall remind you that on 14 December, the European Council decided to start negotiations with Ukraine on its accession to the EU. Representatives of all EU member states voted in favour of starting the negotiation process, with the exception of Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, who left the room before the vote, thus formally abstaining from taking part in it.

We would like to point out that the European Commission on Tuesday, 12 March, approved the negotiating framework for Ukraine's accession to the European Union.

Eight countries are applying for EU membership: Ukraine, Turkey, Albania, North Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia, Moldova and Bosnia and Herzegovina.
