"Endless War" is the cover of the new issue of Der Spiegel

Der Spiegel came out with the cover "Endless War" referring to the military actions on the territory of Ukraine.

The magazine points out that the war has become positional and only heavy losses on either side can "move it forward.

Now, as the second winter of the war begins, it is clear: hopes for a new turn of events were in vain. The war has turned into a positional war. Only with heavy losses the sides can move the front line a little. This war cannot be ended quickly militarily. It can last for years," the publication writes.

Note that positional warfare involves fighting in certain positions - relatively stable fronts. Battles take place on permanent fronts, the boundaries of which do not practically change.

The transition to positional warfare is explained by the inability (given the existing balance of forces and the level of development of weapons and military equipment) of both sides to make breakthroughs in the opponent's defence or to develop tactical breakthroughs into operational ones. The goal of positional warfare is to exhaust the enemy.

Positional warfare is also called trench warfare or trench warfare, because in most cases the fighting is conducted "from the ground" and the soldiers are in a trench.
