Due to constant shelling and fighting, the land in the Kherson region has become poisoned

In the Kherson region, significant soil contamination with heavy metals and explosive residues as a result of military operations has been recorded.
This was reported by the State Environmental Inspectorate of the Southern District, publishing the relevant information on its Facebook page, reports Most.
According to the results of laboratory tests, in the samples of land from the areas of active battles found in excess of permissible norms of lead, cadmium, zinc and mercury. In addition, traces of hexogen and TNT - substances hazardous to the environment and human health - have been found at explosion sites. The situation is especially alarming in the areas where phosphorus munitions were used: acid residues have been detected there, changing the chemical composition of the soil.
Environmentalists warn that produce grown on such land may be toxic. Moreover, the contamination may penetrate into groundwater and get into wells and water intakes, posing a threat to public health.
This is not the first recorded consequence of the fighting on the ecology of the region. Earlier it was reported about the critical level of air pollution: 357 cases of exceeding the maximum permissible concentrations of harmful substances have been registered since the beginning of the year.
