On the night of 31 July, Russian forces launched a powerful combined attack on Kiev, using kamikaze drones and missiles at the same time. The consequences of the strikes were recorded in more than 27 locations in the capital. Residential buildings and infrastructure were damaged, there are dead and dozens of wounded, including children.

According to the head of the Kiev city military administration, Timur Tkachenko, the most devastating consequences of the attack were recorded in Solomenskyi, Svyatoshynskyi, Shevchenkivskyi and Goloseevskyi districts. It was these territories that were the main targets of both drones and missiles.

Residential neighbourhoods, educational institutions, cars, administrative buildings and critical infrastructure came under fire. Many houses had their windows blown out and ceilings destroyed, and fires broke out in some places.

Explosions in the middle of the night and alarm until morning

The attack began deep into the night and was accompanied by a long air alert. The first phase included a massive wave of drone strikes. At around 5 a.m., when the alert had been going on for more than four hours, the Russian army launched an additional missile strike.

Residents of Kiev heard dozens of explosions, and flashes from the air defence system were visible in the sky. Despite its actions, some missiles and drones reached targets in the city.

Victims and wounded

As of the morning of 31 July, it is known about many wounded, among them children and emergency workers. There are fatalities. The exact number of injured is being clarified as rescue efforts continue. Medics and rescuers are providing assistance on the spot, working in the rubble of destroyed buildings, evacuating residents and localising fires.

Specialists of the State Emergency Situations Service and the police continue to inspect the destroyed objects. In some cases, people may remain under the rubble, so the work is being carried out without interruption. Medics, volunteers, psychologists and emergency brigades of public utilities are on duty in the areas hit.

The city administration urges residents not to ignore the air alert signals, take shelter in safe places and follow official information.
