ATACMS destroyed the Russian Nadgrogobiye radar: what is its importance for air defence operations

The Ukrainian military has dealt a major blow to Russian air defences by destroying a 64N6 radar known as the Tombstone.
This radar is a key component of the S-300 and S-400 anti-aircraft missile systems, providing early detection of air targets and their tracking at considerable distances. According to Army Recognition, the elimination of the Tombstone was made possible through the use of U.S. ATACMS missiles recently transferred to Ukraine.
The 64N6 radar plays an important role in air defence operations, acting as the "eye" of the S-300 and S-400 systems. It is capable of detecting air targets, including aircraft, cruise and ballistic missiles, at distances of up to 400 kilometres and altitudes of up to 50 kilometres. Modern technologies, such as phased antenna array, allow it to rapidly scan space and track up to 200 targets simultaneously. The destruction of such a radar significantly weakens Russia's ability to detect and neutralise air threats, making it a priority target for precision-guided attacks.
Meanwhile, Ukrainian intelligence conducted another successful operation. According to the Ukrainian Defence Ministry's Main Intelligence Directorate, a Russian radar station Podlet was destroyed in the western part of temporarily occupied Crimea on 28 November 2024. This complex is used to detect targets at low altitudes and co-operates with the S-300 and S-400 systems. An official statement by the GUR said the equipment was destroyed, but details of the operation were not disclosed.
These operations underscore Ukraine's strategic approach to weakening the enemy's air defences, which gives it a significant advantage in combat operations.
