An atmosphere of darkness and romance: a guide to Wave-Gotik-Treffen 2025 in Leipzig

Wave-Gotik-Treffen (WGT) is an annual internationally renowned festival of "dark" music and subcultures that has been held in Leipzig, Germany since 1992.

In 2025, it will take place on 6-9 June. The festival's core is the huge Agra-Messepark exhibition centre in the south of Leipzig, which can accommodate up to 10,000 spectators. In addition, WGT covers about 40 venues throughout the city - from concert halls and clubs to temples and museums (including the Egyptian Museum, the Museum of Fine Arts, the Crypt at the Temple of the Warriors). In this way, the festival fills the whole of Leipzig with shadows of Gothic romance and fantasy.

History and unique atmosphere

The first official Wave-Gotik-Treffen took place in 1992, just after the unification of Germany, at the Eiskeller nightclub (now Conne Island) in Leipzig. Since then, the festival has grown from a small "meeting of Wave fans" to a mega-event of the world alternative scene: now, WGT gathers about 18-20 thousand participants annually. It is one of the world's largest festivals of gothic, darkwave, industrial and related genres, with representatives of gothic, cybergothic, steampunk and other "dark culture" subcultures.

The uniqueness of Wave-Gotik-Treffen is in the combination of dark aesthetics and the romantic atmosphere of the 19th century. Participants take to the streets of the city in Victorian, masquerade or steampunk costumes - it's like the pages of Marie Gabrielle Lagrange or Bram Stoker's books come to life. There is "dark" music, the smell of incense and smoke, and many performances and processions. The festival never repeats itself - each year it takes on new features, while retaining the characteristic atmosphere of the "black and white dream".

Musical Directions

The WGT programme covers a wide range of "dark scene" musical styles. During four days, there are hundreds of concerts (more than 150 bands and performers) on different city stages. It is not only gothic rock and EBM, but also industrial, darkwave, noise, neo-folk, neo-classical, medieval music and even synthpop and dark ambient. At WGT, you can hear acoustic folk bands, neo-classical bands, metal bands, and electronic DJs. More often than not, more than 150 artists - from underground acts to well-known performers - perform in different halls simultaneously. The festival also includes special parties with DJs and rave sets (e.g. Dark Electro and other club events), where you can dance to the top tracks of dark music.

Festival facilities and features

  • Camping and Obsorge Cards: Tent and RV campsites are organised on the Agra grounds. To camp, you need to purchase a special Obsorge card (usually costs €50). Owning an Obsorge card entitles you to pitch your tent at the official festival campsite. On entry, you exchange your ticket for a continuous wristband allowing you to attend all events.

  • Free transport: The festival ticket includes free travel on all public transport in Leipzig. Trams and buses run around the city, and you can use them at no extra cost throughout the WGT days. This makes it easy to travel between distant venues (e.g. from the city centre to Agra-Messepark).

  • Gothic Market (fair): In the main pavilion at Agra, the large Gothic Market - the largest trade fair for Gothic clothing, jewellery, books and souvenirs in Europe - is open all day long. Here you can buy leather trousers, Victorian dresses, themed accessories and music releases from many bands. The Market is open all four days of the festival and is a notable event attraction.

  • "Victorian Picnic and Stylised Meetings: A classic WGT event, the Victorian Picnic is a costumed outdoor meeting where all participants dress in Victorian style. There is also an annual steampunk picnic, medieval and pagan fairs. These free events allow you to wear your best dresses and costumes, socialise in nature and experience the spirit of the Victorian era.

  • Theatre and Classics: The festival includes not only concerts, but also theatre, ballet, opera and classical concerts. Free tickets are available for some performances for WGT members. The schedule includes theatre performances (Schauspielhaus and others), classical music concerts, opera, and readings of Gothic literature. Art lovers can get a pass to these events and get to know the city's cultural programme.

Leipzig also offers discounts and special events at many museums during WGT days (the Egyptian Museum, the Museum of Fine Arts, Grassi and others offer free admission or guided tours for ticket holders). Throughout the city you can catch jazz nights, film screenings and themed lectures, which are not formally part of the programme but add to the festival atmosphere.

Useful information for first-time travellers

For those travelling for the first time, it is important to plan your trip:

  • Tickets: Tickets can be ordered online via the official website (English section) or from accredited sellers. They usually sell out quickly, so it's best to purchase them well in advance. A full 4-day ticket (Pfingsten-Ticket) costs 170 €. Additionally, you can buy an Obsorge card (€50) for camping. There is a service charge of €8 (regardless of the number of tickets purchased).

  • Where to stay: The best option is a tent at the festival campsite (you need an Obsorge card for this). The city also has plenty of hotels, hostels and private apartments. Leipzig is not small, but on WGT days, hotels tend to fill up quickly, so it's worth booking in advance. Some fans look for accommodation outside the city (e.g. in areas near Leipzig) and get there by bus/electric train.

  • How to get there: Leipzig is conveniently accessible by train (the main station, Leipzig Hbf, is connected to many European cities) or by plane (Leipzig/Halle Airport). From the airport, there are direct trains to the city centre. You can take tram 11 or a bus to Agra from the centre. After arriving in the city, don't forget to exchange your ticket for a wristband and pick up a programme at the festival info point - this will allow you to use public transport for free.

  • Beginner's tip: Prepare yourself for the extensive WGT programme - there are often several concerts taking place simultaneously at different venues. It is recommended to plan your priority performances in advance. It's customary to come to the festival in costume or at least in black - it's the event's spirit, but there are no strict rules. Be sure to bring comfortable shoes and clothes for the changeable weather (summer in Leipzig can be warm, but rain is not uncommon). Have cash on you - although most merchants accept cards, cafeterias and pubs sometimes operate on a cash-only basis.

  • Note: Tickets are non-refundable and non-exchangeable. Once you arrive, you must get a wristband immediately - you will not be allowed into the venues without one. There is organised security and screening at the entrances. Please also observe the dress code and festival rules - failure to comply may result in removal without refund.

Visitors and local attitudes

Wave-Gotik-Treffen annually attracts tens of thousands of visitors from all over the world. These are Germans and people from Russia, Europe, Asia, and Latin America - the festival is very international. In 2019, the total number of participants exceeded 25 thousand, and now stably keeps around 18-20 thousand. Leipzig has a generally positive attitude to the festival: WGT has long been an integral part of the city's cultural life. The authorities and businesses in the town perceive it as a significant tourist event, which attracts hundreds of compatriots and foreigners every year. Locals are used to the "gothic invasion" in early summer and often participate in the festivities - many restaurants, clubs and museums prepare special events for WGT guests. The level of tolerance and interest here is high, which helps guests feel comfortable.
