From observer to participant: Story of the first experience at Wave-Gotik-Treffen 2023

Socportal met Elena, a designer from Ukraine, at the festival and asked if she likes it at WGT2023.

Socportal: Hi! It's a pleasure to have you here. Let's start by introducing yourselves.

Olena: Hi everyone! My name is Elena, I am from Ukraine. I am a graphic designer by profession and in my spare time I study gothic subculture, music, fashion and literature. Last year I was here in Leipzig for work and saw Wave-Gotik-Treffen from outside. I promised myself to come back and be a part of it this year, so here I am!

Socportal: Oh Elena! I'm from Ukraine, too. How long have you been in Germany?

Olena: For three years now. I came to study before the war but I plan to come back when everything is over.

Socportal: We hope that it will be as soon as possible. So, this is your first real experience with the WGT. How do you feel now that you are here and are part of the event?

Elena: It's unreal! The atmosphere, the people, the music - it's all so exciting. It's like stepping into a completely different world, and I love every moment of it. Honestly, it's a dream come true for me.

Socportal: That's great! Can you tell us about the difference between your experience last year, when you were a spectator from the outside, and now?

Elena: Last year I could only see the outfits, the crowd and the general atmosphere in the city, but I wasn't a part of it. It was exciting, but there was a sense of longing. This year, being in the thick of it all, I'm not just watching - I'm experiencing. I'm dancing, laughing, meeting people from all over the world and discovering new music. It's a strong contrast.

Socportal: Speaking of outfits, you look great. Could you describe your look and how you chose it?

Elena: Thank you! I picked out a Victorian-style dress in peach velvet and paired it with peach gloves and black martens, a feather hat and a fur cape, and a long cape to wrap up in completely to give the look a classic gothic style and keep you warm :) I also dyed my hair peach, so I have this double look, with the cape and the fluffy hair, and with the brimmed cape dress. I think this dual look perfectly represents my personal style. Promise to process my pics when you post!

SocialPortal: I'll do my best and send you the link :) Now, a question about music: which of the performances at WGT 2023 did you enjoy the most?

Elena: So far I'm very attracted by the variety of genres here. I love Apocalypse Ochestra, their performance was incredible. I also liked the band Vogelfrey.

SocialPortal: Diversity is definitely one of the key features of WGT. Do you have any words for those watching the festival from the sidelines, as you did last year?

Elena: I would say: be sure to be a part of it at least once. It's not just a festival, it's a celebration of creativity and togetherness. It's a beautiful experience that's better lived than watched. So start planning for WGT 2024!
