A British woman has revealed how she gave birth to the same baby twice

A resident of the British county of Kent, Lisa Coffey, has shared the amazing birth story of her son Luke, whom she gave birth to "twice".

Doctors diagnosed the baby with a split spine (spina bifida) early in pregnancy, which could have led to serious abnormalities in the development of the spine and spinal cord. However, thanks to modern medical technology and the efforts of doctors, the defect was corrected before the baby was born.

Diagnosis and solution

When Lisa was 20 weeks pregnant, doctors were informed that her son had a spinal cleft, a condition in which the bones of the spine do not completely close around the spinal cord. Without treatment, this could lead to disability and mobility problems. However, doctors suggested the possibility of intrauterine surgery, which could correct the defect before the baby was even born.

In the 27th week of pregnancy, Lisa underwent a rare and complex operation: the baby was partially removed from the womb so surgeons could correct the spinal defect. After the successful intervention, the foetus was placed back in the womb and the pregnancy continued to term. Lisa said the operation gave her son a second chance at a full life.

A unique operation

Surgery on a foetus in the womb is becoming more and more common in global medical practice, but each case is still unique. Doctors actually performed a surgical intervention in the body of a baby that was still in the process of development, which requires enormous precision and experience. After the procedure, Lisa continued the pregnancy and at 38 weeks, Luka was born naturally.

Lisa recalls how difficult it was to go through the surgery, but she was supported by the medical team, giving her hope for a successful resolution. After birth, Luca spent a little over a week in the intensive care unit, where he underwent several additional surgeries to finally repair the effects of his spinal cord injury.

Life after birth

Today, Luca is making impressive progress thanks to regular physiotherapy sessions. His parents say that his physical development is going well and they hope that soon he will be able to walk on his own. Despite the difficulties of the first few months of life, the boy is well on his way to a full recovery.
