Zelensky said whether he will go to the next presidential election

Office of the President

It is prohibited by law to hold voting in Ukraine under martial law.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has said that he has not yet decided whether he will run in the next presidential election, but he does not rule out the possibility of running for president. The head of state said this in an interview with the Czech publication Český rozhlas Plus.

According to Zelensky, the decision to re-nominate is directly related to the course of the war in Ukraine.

Sometimes I think about repeated participation in the election," the president admitted to a clarifying question of the journalist.

We shall remind you that earlier Zelenskyy emphasised his readiness for the election provided that international partners could ensure its security. The president also openly supports the possibility of changes in the legislation on elections during martial law and instructed parliament to work out options for holding the vote.

For their part, the CEC and parliament have already prepared a number of technical developments: seven working groups are working on the documents, drafts of bills are available, but they have not yet been submitted for consideration to avoid political conflicts.

According to the Ukrainian constitution, the next parliamentary elections were to be held in autumn 2023 and the presidential election in March 2024. However, holding the vote under martial law is prohibited by law. Nevertheless, Ukraine's Western allies have repeatedly expressed their desire for the elections to be held despite the war.
