Volodymyr Zelenskyy has held a press conference with Joe Biden. Before that, the presidents signed a bilateral security agreement between Ukraine and the USA.

The main result of the G7 leaders' summit for Ukraine was a bilateral security agreement with the USA and the receipt of more air defence equipment and aircraft. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said this in an evening address on 14 June.

The historic result with the United States is a bilateral security agreement, which brings our relations to the level of true alliance," Zelenskyy said.

He emphasised that this is the strongest agreement with America for all 33 years of Ukraine's independence.

There is a legally binding part of the agreement, there are absolutely useful details on air defence, on aircraft. We have fixed that America will help Ukraine to supply squadrons of fighter jets - as many fighter jets as Ukraine needs. We will work on this. I also talked to the leaders about accelerating the training of pilots," the president said.

Zelensky noted that the agreement with America now stipulates that Ukraine will be supported both during the war and during peace.

Real long-term. We see peace in the same way - a just peace for our people. I thank you, Mr President Biden, thank you to both parties and houses of Congress, thank you, America! - zelensky said.

US President Joe Biden said during a joint meeting with Volodymyr Zelenskyy that the USA would not send troops to Ukraine but would help with arms supplies and economic support.

Biden stressed that the goal of the USA is to strengthen Ukraine's credible defence and deterrence capabilities for the long term.

The U.S. will help ensure Ukraine's ability to do both. Not by sending American troops to fight in Ukraine, but by providing weapons and ammunition," Biden explained.

The agreement with Ukraine provides a number of commitments for the US and Ukraine.

In particular, it is about:

  • expansion of intelligence sharing;
  • continued training of Ukrainian military personnel at military bases in Europe and the USA;
  • strengthening co-operation between the armed forces in accordance with NATO standards;
  • investments in the military-industrial complex;
  • support for economic and energy recovery, following Russia's large-scale strikes on the energy network.
