Over 16,000 people missing in Ukraine - Denisova

Ombudsman Denisova said that all the missing people would be searched for.

More than 16,000 people have gone missing in Ukraine, of which 2,000 are children who went missing with their parents. Ukrainian Ombudsman Lyudmila Denisova reported this on Telegram.

She clarified that the telephone hotline of the Commissioner of the Verkhovna Rada received more than 16.6 thousand requests to search for missing Ukrainians, of which almost 2 thousand were children who disappeared with their parents.

According to her, she informed the Commissioner for Human Rights of the Council of Europe, Dunya Mijatovic, who is in Ukraine on a 4-day visit.

In cooperation with representatives of the International Commission on Missing Persons, we plan to apply a joint mechanism to search for them, Denisova noted, saying that Mijatović welcomed such cooperation and added that it would be possible to achieve real results thanks to it.

Denisova also told her colleague that since their last meeting in Strasbourg, the number of calls to the Verkhovna Rada Commissioner's hotline and a special telephone line for psychological assistance has increased. The geography of appeals has also changed.

In addition, Denisova raised the issue of a pre-planned forced deportation of Ukrainians to the Russian Federation.

Based on the results of a four-day working trip to Ukraine, Dunya Mijatović plans to make a presentation at the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe and report on what he has seen in Ukraine. She stressed that in the future she would continue to raise the issue of Ukraine at all international platforms and insist that war crimes should be thoroughly investigated. We agreed to strengthen cooperation in protecting the rights of citizens of Ukraine and the constant exchange of information on the current state of affairs in our state, Denisova said.
