Support for refugees has fallen sharply in a Baltic country

Support for accepting Ukrainian refugees has noticeably decreased among Estonians. This is reported by err.ee. with reference to a survey Turu-uuringute conducted from 7 to 12 September, it was attended by 1510 people aged 15 years and older across Estonia.

It is noted that only 66 per cent of respondents agreed that their country should accept Ukranians fleeing the war. At the same time, in the first half of 2023, the reception of Ukrainian refugees was supported by 74% to 82%.

The portal emphasises that this is the lowest figure since the beginning of the reception of Ukrainians.

It is also reported that a third of respondents (33%) are strongly opposed to Estonia accepting refugees from Ukraine. Another 10% have no opinion on this issue.

It is indicated that those Estonians, whose level of material well-being is high enough, are ready to accept Ukrainians, while those who have difficulties with money and work do not want to see refugees in their country.

We would like to add that after receiving temporary protection in Estonia, refugees from Ukraine get the same rights as Estonian residents, for example, the right to study, work and through this to receive health insurance.

Ukrainians who have been granted temporary protection status in Estonia are entitled to financial assistance. The payment for groceries and other priority expenses is 200 euros per month for the first family member, 160 euros per month for each additional adult family member and 240 euros for each child.
