What are the five key advantages of Patriot air defence systems.

This was reported by the Ukrainian Defence Ministry.

Two more Patriot air defence systems have been deployed to protect Ukrainian cities and critical infrastructure," the ministry said.

As Ukrainian Defence Minister Denys Shmygal said earlier, this was achieved thanks to recent agreements with the German government.

Patriot is an anti-aircraft missile system manufactured by the United States. It is one of the most advanced air defence systems in the world. It is designed to destroy aircraft, cruise and ballistic missiles. Patriot is capable of shooting down high-speed and complex targets, providing multi-layered defence of strategic facilities and major cities, the Defence Ministry said.

The Defence Ministry talks about the Patriot's main advantages.

Versatility. The complex destroys various aerodynamic and ballistic targets, including hypersonic ones. Patriot missiles defeat hypersonic Zirkon and Kinzhal missiles, which reach speeds of up to 11,000 and up to 16,000 km/h, respectively.

High performance. Patriot's precision radar uses technologies that allow simultaneous detection and tracking of various targets. Patriot missiles (especially the PAC-3 MSE version) are highly accurate and hit targets with direct guidance, which is especially important for defence against ballistic missiles.

Multitasking. One Patriot battery simultaneously detects up to 100 targets and escorts up to 8 targets.

Automaticity. The ability to operate in automatic mode allows Patriot to react instantly to threats, which is critical for intercepting hypersonic missiles.

Range and Altitude. Patriot engages air targets at altitudes up to 24 kilometres and ranges up to 160 kilometres, covering large areas.

Patriot air defence systems currently protect Ukrainian cities and critical infrastructure, reducing losses from Russian cruise and ballistic missile attacks on energy and civilian facilities.

on 17 December, Ukrainian Defence Minister Denys Shmygal announced the signing of a number of important new agreements with German partners worth over 1.2bn euros. First of all, thanks to the agreements between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, Germany has pledged to allocate 11.5bn euros to support Ukraine next year.
