Ukraine can become a leader in Europe in terms of the number of freelancers

Despite the Russian invasion, Ukrainian freelancers managed to maintain high demand for their services. In the first months of 2023, it increased by 84% compared to last year.

According to a study by Freelancehunt, Ukraine has the potential to become a leader in Europe in terms of the number of freelancers in the coming years. The share of self-employed among the able-bodied population may be from 15 to 20%.

In March 2023 Payoneer service Ukraine is among the top 5 countries for freelancers due to favourable environment, high demand, favourable policies and easy access to payment solutions.

Freelancers aged between 18 and 35 are the largest group in this field, men 53.13% vs. 46.87% women.

The most popular categories among freelancers are "Design and Art" (32.5%), "Programming" (19.99%) and "Text Work" (19.38%). And freelancers aged 48+ are more likely to specialise in "Architecture and Engineering" (14.29%), "Audio and Video" (11.49%) and "Word Processing" (11.46%).

Men generally prefer jobs in programming, architecture, audio, video and mobile applications. Women are more likely to choose outsourcing, consulting, design, translation and word processing.

How much freelancers work

Freelance work is often seen as an additional income, with 53.71% working less than 20 hours per week. Those who are given to freelancing alone tend to work more, up to 40 hours per week.

How much freelancers earn

The largest share of freelancers earning over $3,000 work in the Promotion category at 8.33%.

Freelancers earning between $2,000 and $3,000 are more likely to be employed in the Services category, and those earning between $1,000 and $2,000 are more likely to be developers.

Professionals earning between $500 and $1,000 are more likely to be found in development, copywriting, translations, design and promotion.

But copywriters and translators can earn less than $500 per month.

Meanwhile, according to Payoneer, women earn an average of $22 per hour, compared to $24 per hour for men, which is 92 cents for every $1 earned by men.
