Turkey secretly supplies cluster munitions to Ukraine
Cluster munitions supplied by Turkey are effective against tanks, but also dangerous for civilians.
This was reported by Foreign Policy, which cited anonymous US and European officials.
According to the paper's investigation, Turkey started sending US-designed cluster artillery shells to Ukraine in late 2022.
These weapons are designed to destroy tanks by breaking into smaller submunitions that can remain on the battlefield for years if not detonated immediately. Each projectile scatters about 88 smaller munitions.
These shells are about five to ten times more lethal than the standard fragmentation projectiles that the United States has already sent to Ukraine. Citing wear and tear on artillery batteries, Ukraine has also requested so-called BONUS cluster shells and small-diameter bombs from Sweden that can be launched with HIMARS, which the United States has agreed to send but has yet to provide.
