The new defence line near Avdiivka was shown in the AFU

Active work on the construction of fortifications began in December, and they were carried out even before our troops left Avdeevka.

Photos of engineering and fortification structures in the Avdiivka direction have been published. The photo was published on 6 March by a representative of the Tavriya operational-strategic group, Dmytro Likhoviy.

They are largely already built. Somewhere (a little further from the front) they are still being built. Depending on the line, this is done by the OSA (regional administrations), civilian contractors - construction companies; GSST (State Special Transport Service); engineering units of the AFU Support Forces, engineering units of mechanised and motorised infantry brigades, - wrote Dmitry Likhoviy.

He noted that "there were and are certain organisational difficulties. The lack of people, funds, some materials and weapons, the proximity of the front line, inertia and procrastination, bureaucracy, democracy, after all, the fields - they are someone else's. But there is also a result. You can touch it, feel it, in the end, climb into it and hide from shelling."

Likhoviy noted that active work began in December, and it was carried out even before the withdrawal of our troops from Avdiivka. After - became more active.

In Donetsk region, the new IFS (engineering fortification structures) do not look like "walls" or "lines". They are a branched system of fresh EFPs (platoon strongpoints) on the second defensive line, to which infantry units will retreat if necessary.

It is noted that there are dozens of these new BOPs. At different depths of the defence lines. They are hundreds of metres of zigzag trenches - with firing cells in different directions, covered by slits, sometimes with armoured capsules. They are also caponiers, anti-tank ditches, concrete bunkers, "dragon's teeth", other fortifications and barriers, depending on the proximity to the battle line.

It is noted that the location of fortifications takes into account the peculiarities of the relief and other terrain elements, the presence of dominant heights, water obstacles, roads and so on. In other words, it is not necessary to build a solid "wall" if a river or a pond can be used, and the HEU can be dug in on an elevated position from which it can be seen and all approaches can be fired at.

Yes, on the second line we are not talking about concrete, but about wood as the main element of fortifications (plus geotextile, iron mesh, bars, staples). But military engineering experts are convinced that wood has many advantages: it is mobile, it does not require time for solidification and shrinkage; it is quickly installed, in case of hit and destruction - quickly repaired and replaced; it does not give such splinters as concrete; it does not pile up such a mass in case of rubble, - wrote Likhoviy.

The old regulations called for trenches to be 1.5 metres high and 0.8 metres wide. The new trenches are 2 metres high and 1 metre wide so that soldiers can move without crouching down and have the ability to carry wounded men on stretchers across the trench if necessary.

Some of the trenches have planks on the floor and wells for water drainage.
